How It Works

How it works

  • You (the NRI) receives order information from the Canadian customer
  • You then invoice your customer and hire a commercial carrier to ship the ordered goods to Canada
  • J.B. Ellis receives the shipment data/documentation and transmits this information to the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA)
  • The CBSA officer makes a clearance decision - all while the shipment is enroute to Canada
  • The goods are delivered and J.B. Ellis accounts for any applicable duties and taxes with the CBSA

Your customer will find their purchase as easy as buying domestically.

Direct Payment Options to CBSA

Accounts Receivable Ledger (ARL)
ARL is the official records and accounting system of the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). It simplifies the collection of duties and taxes by reconciling all shipment transactions under a single account, providing one electronic statement per month, and enabling multiple online payment options direct to the CBSA through your financial institution*.

*Contact your financial banking institution to find out if they are ARL compatible

How it works

Importers have two direct payment options available:

  • GST Direct Payment Option*
The GST Direct Payment Option, or G option, enables the importer to pay the GST owing on all shipments during a billing period directly to the CBSA, via online banking. J.B. Ellis will still pay any duties owing on your behalf which will appear on your monthly J.B. Ellis statement.

*This option is only available to Canadian resident importers.

  • Importer Direct Security Option*
The Importer Direct Security Option, or I option, requires that the importer post security with the CBSA, but it enables the importer to pay all duties and taxes owing on shipments during a billing period directly to the CBSA via online banking.

*This option is available to both resident and non-resident importers.
