Canadian Resident Importers

Canadian resident importers (also known as the Canadian importers of record) are companies with a Canadian presence who, for customs purposes, are legally responsible for ensuring their goods are correctly documented upon entry into Canada. This includes an accurate declaration of both value and origin - all in accordance with the Customs Act and the rules and regulations associated therewith. In addition, certain goods must be compliant with various other government agencies, such as the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, Health Canada, Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and Transport Canada to name a few. Payment of charges and fees associated with importation also rests with the Canadian importer of record. These may include regular import duty, anti-dumping duty, countervailing duty, tax (GST), and surtax.

How it works

The exporter/vendor receives order information from the Canadian purchaser (importer)
The exporter/vendor hires a commercial carrier to ship the ordered goods to Canada
J.B. Ellis receives the shipment data/documentation and transmits this information (PARS) to the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA)
The CBSA officer will acknowledge receipt of all release data elements, and provide confirmation in the form of a PARS accepted message - all while the shipment is enroute to Canada
On arrival at the border, the CBSA officer makes a release/examination decision
Once released by CBSA, the goods are delivered and J.B. Ellis accounts for any applicable duties and taxes with CBSA on behalf of the importer
